It sounds like a failed AMM, get a used one from the bone yard if you can. I would replace the relay and eliminate the switch for safety reasons.
You might try disconnecting and cleaning the electrical connector for the AMM to see if that helps. Try disconnecting the connector and see if it drives any differently.
