Actually many people have had bad experience with the platinums in these cars; don't know why, maybe they run too cool (or hot, not sure).
Replace that fuel pump relay, it's cheap and a LOT easier than adding a switch - that's the craziest thing I've heard of since replacing the relay was probably far cheaper and easier. I wonder if he made sure to supply power to both fuel pumps or if he just turned on the main pump with his switch?
