Stripped Thermostat Housing Screw 200 1989

Dear Volvo Colleagues,

well I thought I was going to partake in a simple maintenance routine of replacing a thermostat on my 1989 240 DL Wagon. I removed the 1st 10mm screw with no problem. Now the 2nd - the nightmare begins. It would not budge. I sprayed it with WD-40, and other solutions, including Coca-Cola, to try to break the seal. Eventually, I ended up stripping the screw. I tried using vice-grips; each attempt removing more and more material, so much so that the screw no longer resembles a hexagon ---- Crap!

My questions to you:

(1) What is the best method of removing it now? Should it be grinded? Drilled?
(2) What if the bolt threads also get stripped in my haste to remove the screw?

I would appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Thank you in advance.
