1990 760: fuel guage inoperative 700

I bought this 760 a couple of months ago, and the fuel gauge didn't work when I bought it. The PO, who is a friend of mine, told me that the gauge worked "sometimes" and that the needle would suddenly spring up to read normally. In the two months I've owned it, I haven't seen this happen once.

I'd like to know if there is any other potential source of this problem besides the sending unit. According to my local discount Volvo parts supplier, a new sending unit is about $500. Is it possible to R&R these, I wonder? I suppose the gauge in the dash could be bad, but I kinda doubt this. Dunno how to get into the instrument cluster anyway.

Thoughts?

Best,

Michael

My 88 765 does the same thing. It isn't the sender on this one, it is the gauge cluster. I solved the problem by resetting the odomater when I fill up and top it off at 233 miles. That is much easier than pulling the instrument cluster out.

Regards,

Check the connections where the sender mounts to the tank. You could have a simple loose plug or corroded/broken wire. Simply remove the access plate. Very easy to do.

It is easy to remove the access panel. But a little more challenging to remove to the sending unit. When you pull the unit you will likely find the two crappy little solder contacts at the elbow have come loose and need to be re-soldered. R/R the pre-pump and sock while you are in there. Good section on this in the FAQ.

Good point but I was just referring to the external connections. Thought one of them may be bad. You're right that pulling the sender is sort of a pain.
