240 wagon rear cargo cover - installation 200

Found a 240 wagon rear cargo cover (the type that looks like a roll-up window shade) in a box that I had forgotten about. There are no instructions for installation. Does installation require removal of seat belts for the jump seat? Are templates required for installation? I'm not exactly sure where to mount this unit. Looks like a very nice accessory if I can put it in correctly. Thanks for sharing any advice on this topic. Daryl

Mine has all the hardware in place from the side mounts (behind the rear seat) to the rear clips that hold the shade in the extended position. I can take photo's and get the measurements for you, but you will need to send me your e-mail address, or a good phone number so that I can do this. I still can't post pictures on the board.

Sell it to me PLEASE. Mine came with one, but was lost during a move long ago. I would love to find a tan one.

240 wagon rear cargo cover - installation 200

Hi Bill. Thanks for replying to my question. I do believe all of the hardware is complete with this cover, so I'm hoping to get it installed in my 93 wagon IF there aren't too many complicating issues. BTW, mine is a tan cover. What I am concerned about is the safety belts which are riddling the area where the cover needs to be mounted. In addition to the seatbelts for the rear seats, there are belt retractor units for the rear jump seat, too, which are mighty bulky, and would seem to interfere with a clean installation of the cover apparatus. If they are indeed in the way, I'm prepared to remove the jump seat retractors and belts in favor of the cover. If this is necessary, then the unsightly mounting holes for the belts will have to be cosmetically covered/plugged with plastic plugs of some type. Best case scenario would be if the cover installs without having to remove the retractors....does your car have the jump seat belts, too? Daryl

My car does not nor did it ever have the 3rd seat. The locater discs mount just behind (leading edge is 1/2" behind) the rear (second) seat latch pad. The disc on the driver's side mounts about 10 degrees behind vertical, or at about the 11 o'clock position. The passenger side will be clocked at the one o'clock position. The rear hooks mount on the flat pillar for the rear door, and are on a level plane with the mount discs. The shade indexes into the discs, and when it is extended, the hooks hold the shade open. You just give a tug on the shade and lift it out of the hooks to allow it to retract. Don't just turn it loose, but keep it in your hand as it retracts. Releasing it can break the tang on the spring, and the shade will be ruined.

You should have 2 discs with the rectangular slots. Two hooks, and six screws. You will need to drill the body of the car to accept the brackets.

I tried to call you tonight, but got no answer. I can take photos for you if you wish. You can reach me at 352-978-1708

The shade will not interfere with the belt retractors for the second seat, but I can't tell you about the third row.

Bill

Bill, thanks for sending photos of your brackets. They are tilted more than I would have suspected, but there should be plenty of leeway in that regard. After looking at this thing more closely, I believe that the jump seat belts can stay in the car. The cover should be able to squeak by. Daryl

Daryl,

They are canted to index the shade to sit with the cover exiting at the correct angle. If you set them up with the screws at the vertical, then the shade would exit at an up angle, and conversely, with them canted too far to the rear, the shade would exit at a downward angle.

Yes, your photos clarify this. Earlier, you had indicated "clock" positions of 1:00 and 11:00. The photos show closer to 2:30 and 8:30. On my car, the 1:00 and 11:00 positions will actually be best. Must be some variation in the pegs at the ends of the roller on different covers.

DARYL: INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 240 wagon rear cargo cover 200

Daryl --

Here's where to get a pdf file of a scan of the original Volvo installation instructions. This web site has a ton of 240 installation manuals.

I believe this will answer all of your questions on the cargo cover.

DARYL: INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 240 wagon rear cargo cover 200

Thanks for the website info Bob. Actually, thanks to two other forum contributors, I received the help needed to install the cover, including a hard copy of the instructions on the link you posted. The cover is now in place and looking great.

After following the instructions carefully, I find that shutting the tailgate on the cover presents some issues with the rear flap jamming up on the tailgate inner trim. The flap tends to droop a bit due to it's "hinge" about 6" from the leading edge. To lie flat when the tailgate is closed, with flap resting on top of tailgate inner trim, the hinge feature should be stiffer. But, it isn't. So, have to find a way to stiffen it a bit. Also, the cutout for the rear brakelight doesn't match the brakelight case exactly, so this also tends to create some hangup issues.

So much for the nitpicking, it serves a purpose as intended. I'm pleased with it in spite of its foibles.

Daryl
