fuel pump problem 700 1990

My 740 has been sitting idle for about 4 yrs. I'm trying to get it to start but to no avail. It gets spark, but I think the fuel pump is dead. How do I tell, I don't know if I will hear it running. I removed the fuel line at the fuel injector distribution port and there was a small amount of gas here, but when I try to start, no fuel is seen exiting the fuel line.

A little late here, but you can get a good diagnostic guide to 740 no-starts at www.stepbystepvolvo.com.

When you turn the key you will here the pump run for about 4 sec. You may also want to listen for the pump inside the tank. Have someone else turn the key and go back and listen. You should hear the pump by the drivers side rear tire.

If you are in fact getting 12v at the pump when you try to start it and the pump is not coming on you may have a "stuck" fuel pump. You should be able to feel the pump run when you hold your hand on it.

You can check for 12v by probing the wire with a meter or test light while you attempt to start it.

If the fuel pump is gummed up you can tap it with a hammer while attempting to start it and those vibrations might cause it to engage. Good luck.

Randy

"...You can check for 12v by probing the wire with a meter or test light while you attempt to start it...."

If you have a sedan, you should be able to remove the plastic panel from inside the trunk on the LH side and see the wire harness that leads to the pump/sender unit. There is a disconnect up near the LH trunk hinge that is a real convenient place to check for power. The pink wire that is a bit heavier guage than the other wires is the the pump power wire. As the other respondent noted, you should be able to measure 12v in the pink wire for a couple seconds when you first turn the ignition on.

Power at the pink wire with no pump noise = a stuck pump.
No power at the pink wire = a problem forward of the pump like a bad relay or fuse.

If it's been sitting 4 years, I'd lean toward Randy's logic (stuck pump).

Thanks guys. Its a dead pump. How do you paste a photo on this site? I can't get all of the hoses and electrical connects off the pump. How on earth do you do it?

This is the best Pictorial of the job that I know of.

I should have looked at this earlier. Thanx a bunch. At least I don't feel like a complete idiot when I see that you removed the filler hose, Now I'll try it.

Thanx

Gilly1. I'll keep these photos for a while
