A/C Question 900

Hi Guys,
I'm having issues with my AC, when I bought the car, it didn't cool worth a hoot, so I went to hook up one of those cans of 134 from WM, and the gauge was reading fairly high on the low side, I bled it into the system slowly, and the air was ok til the last couple days. But the LS pressure scares me at 50-60 psi, do I have a possible restriction? Where is the orifice tube located? I have seen these clog before.

A/C Question 900

If the compressor is running and the low side pressures are 50-60 psi that is too high. You could have too much R134a in the system, air in the system or not enough airflow over the condenser. If you had a restriction in the system such as a plugged orifice valve, you might actually be showing a vacuum on the low pressure (suction) side of the compressor.

A/C Question 900

Dewfpo,
Do you think that the dryer is no longer functioning also?

I wouldn't worry about the drier unless you've left the system open for a long period of time. The reciever/dryer has 2 purposes : it collects liquid R134a so that it is not pulled into the compressor, the second thing it does is collect any moisture in the system. It basically has a desiccant bag sitting at the bottom of it. They really don't go bad unless they have been exposed to the atmosphere when moisture (humidity) can get in (more than the desiccant can handle).

A/C Question 900

If you are reading pressure with engine not running and the car has been parked overnight. 50 to 80 psi are ok depending on ambient temperature. With engine running 45 psi before it cycles off. The orifice tube is down bellow the dryer. Follow the thinner pipe from the condenser to the evaporator. You will see a union in the middle and the pipe is a bit thicker there. That where the expansion valve is. A car that old will probably need a new dryer. Over time the dryer daes not do its purpose. You refill and refill and no cold/ Change the dryer and you will have cool all summer long if there is not any leaks anywhere. Last and lets hope not, but if the orifice tube is clogged completely your compressor is shot.
