Dont run out and pay good money on the alternator. Usually only the brushes wear out.
They are a $7 part and can be replaced without disassembling the whole alternator.

at 300K miles I still have my original alternator. I just replaced the Brushes. the bearings sound fine. I do have some free alternators in the basement though.
