1994 940 need to give it a little gas for first three seconds of start up,,, 900

I just bought the above mentioned car. The car has 162,000 miles. I drove it 170 miles home and it did quite well on the road. I found even just pulling in to get gas and then leaving, I would have to give it just a tad bit of gas to keep it from dyeing, but only for about three seconds, then it was fine. The check engine light and service light are on too. Just got home, so I have not had a whole lot of chace to look things over. There is some oil on the front of the engine, so I will be doing a timeing belt and front seals, and probably a full tune up too. However, their must be something causing the actal starting problem that I have.

Thanks and happy bricking

Non-turbo? Regina or Bosch?

Check those codes in the OBD unit. Read the 700/900 FAQ on this.

check and clean the idle control valve under the intake manifold
check and clean if needed the throttle position sensor at the base of the intake manifold
check all vacuum hose for crack and leak or just replace any old stiff vacuum hoses.

check and clean your flame trap as i am sure u plan to

remove and clean or just clean well with a paper clip the brass nipple on the intake manifold which attaches to smallest vacuum hose coming off the flame trap

I think your problem will be fixed after following Trichard's suggestions. Also, make sure that the throttle gauge is correctly adjusted: you should hear the TPS click as soon as you pull on the throttle cable...

My 740T has a stalling on cold start issue. I too have to give it a bit of gas before I move off from a cold start. Warmed, the car doesn't stall.

I have tried replacing the 02 sensor - it worked well, for just a week. Problem is now back.

I am in the midst of replacing the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (not the temp gauge sensor) and will report if that solves the problem.

Replacing an O2 sensor won't help on a cold start issue-- the signal from the O2 sensor isn't used by the ECU until it is warm enough to provide useful information.

The coolant temp sensor is a better bet...

Good luck!

No luck with the ECT sensor change 900

Right, but that's exactly what happened when I changed the 02 sensor! The problem went away for a about a week. I have just changed the ECT sensor. No help. I am at least a lot more pleased to know that I have fixed the two key hardware components that determine fuel consumption, and I now feel better about the integrity of the intake manifold gasket.

I have the same problem with both of my '93 940 turbo wagons. I have eliminated just about everything, on a stab at what's left I got a new fuel pressure regulator and a bunch of vacuum line hose and will report back with my findings tomorrow afternoon. Let's hope!

I look forward to hearing about your progress on this buddy! It's annoying as hell this problem.

I believe that i have solved the problem, at least for my vehicles in any case. They still crank a bit longer than I would like, but the install of the new fprs have made a huge difference, nothing at all like it was before. No more no start or stumbling on the first crank w/o gas pedal application, and I still have a tiny bit of tach waving going on at idle but I think I might have a small vacuum leak still to deal with somewhere that I have to track down. Interesting to note; when I removed the old fpr the fuel rail was pretty much EMPTY - I expected fuel to come spurting out everywhere when I popped it off, but nada, which concerns me a bit. I will keep at it and post more if I get any positive results. In the meantime, any advice would be welcomed on my end.

Very good info about the FPR.

When I first got my car, I had noticed that the FPR was a shiny new part. I might go tinker with it, or the vacuum hose leading to it. Thing is, I swopped the old hose for a smaller inner diameter (ID) silicone one. It's been at the back of my mind that maybe the smaller ID hose is not good for controlling the FPR since even when I first got the car (and it was in pretty shabby shape), it had never once stumbled and stalled on a cold start.
