I have 212,000 miles on my 740 turbo wagon and have never had the tranny looked at, she runs fine and shifts smoothly with the exception of the od which is not shifting into. I have driven it this way with no problem and am wondering is it time for a tune-up or just wait until she fails?

With the price of gas what it is you may want to look into fixing the OD. It could be just a bad switch, broken wire or loose plug? There's plenty of troubleshooting tips here regarding OD repairs.

How long are you planning on keeping the car?

There are some fairly simple things that could be causing the OD not to work. Check the 700/900 FAQ for more.

Also think about a transmission flush.
