does someone have a short term quick 200

does someone have a short term quick, easy and effective way of patching a rust through on an oil pan to be able to drive the car 80 miles so a proper job can be done.

    JB Weld it was 200

made large bubble gum size piece and used a battery powered drill to wire brush the area then just wadded the stuff in as good as i could, through a half dozen quarts of oil in the trunk, let is sit for a few hours and departed.

made it home with no problem and a no oil leak. now i must decide if i really want to remove the pan and replace with an other of drain the thing and scrupulously clean the surface and re jb it.

the hole is not that large but the area around it is thinner than it should be.

i thought of doing this and tell me if it sounds like a sustainable idea.

find a small very thick sheet metal screw which once screwed into the hole will only be a tiny amount into the inside of the pan then the JB will have an anchor to hold on to as well as being applied all over the weakened area. and once dry i would top off with fiberglass resin and cloth.

the entire area is under 9 sq inches

does this sound sensible to last?

This may be a crazy response(hope not). But if it wont leak out in 10 hours over night, how will it all drain in 80 miles? cant you just take 2 quarts with you on the trip and keep an eye on the level?

I have no experience with JB weld but, depending on how bad it's dripping, Epoxy Resin and a few strips of fiberglas and you can be driving it in 15 minutes.

    thanks all.

i am unable to drain the oil and let it sit overnight as the car is in boston on the street ...dripping.

which is why i asked for a quick and dirty repair to get me home where i can perform surgery in the proper environment with the right tools.

for those who know boston know roxbury isn't it!

I know Roxbury, I lived on Huntington Ave for awhile and drove a cab for about 4 hours!
You can clean off a larger area real well with a solvent then squish some JB Weld or Epoxy into the hole or crack, then overlay a larger area of JB Weld over the cleaned area and it should hold fine. Keep an eye on the oil level.

There is a 2 part repair stick that is actually formulated as a gas tank repair. You wad the 2 strips together, and knead them until the color is uniformly grey. Then press it onto the leaking area. You don't have to drain anything. The putty will cure quickly, and should get you the short distance to the repair shop. Most parts houses carry it.

My '92 945T had rust perforations in the oil pan (I think the PO parked it routinely on grass in summer and ran it on SW Ontario salty winter roads). The holes were patched by draining the pan overnight, sanding down the rust scabs, then applying JB Weld and covering that with metallized RTV. It has been fine for two years now.

    Good luck!

I used JB weld on a Dodge Caravan oil pan, it lasted years with no leaks. I drained the oil, let it sit overnight, cleaned the area with carb cleaner, and roughed up the metal with a wire brush. Dan
