Started a separate thread a month or two ago requesting folks advice for exhaust ideas ranging from brands to under vs over axle exhaust pipes. Thanks to all who suggested that I call Tasca Volvo. Good experience. Here are some thoughts to consider (application was 240 1993 sedan nonTurbo):
- The Starla system weighs less than the Volvo system. It has the under axle exhaust pipe. Never cared much for the exhaust system having that much strain on it from the rear axle and the "clunking" over even the smallest bumps.
- Volvo's over axle is superior in my opinion, even when you consider the condensation build up that will occur between the outlet of the front muffler and the over axle pipe. Although I don't buy that as a negative because the condensation can build up in the bottom of the mufflers, so what's the problem? Everything fit better than the Starla and everything lined up without any bending or expanding. I've read on this forum that the Volvo system has a lifetime warranty. I need to call Tasca to confirm that.
- Volvo's clamps (#976587) are similar to Starla's except the bolt. Starla's bolt is counter held by a bent piece of metal on the clamp at the top and has been known to give way under the high torque required to draw the clamp closed. Volvo's requires a counter hold with another wrench. I think I prefer the Volvo style.
If you're wanting pricing from your local dealer:
- Exhaust system part # 273989 (both mufflers, over axle pipe, tailpipe, 4 isolators and 4 clamps.
- If you need to replace the over axle pipe, part # 1219271
The connection between my catalytic convertor and the header pipe does not require a doughnut. Strictly two flanges bolted together drawing the two flared pieces of pipe together. I've found that 3 45mm x 8mm bolts with flat washers at both ends and lock washers are just right. 5/16 will work as well. Be careful though, past experience has shown that you can actually start to deform the pipes flares and the flanges with too much torque on those bolts.
Regarding the over axle pipe, it won't work without the over axle front muffler. The outlet has a 90 angle up and additional pipe extending the vertical.
Anyway, just wanted to pay the forum back with how it went. Thanks again!!!
