How does your mechanic come up with $4K? Unless he has a factory-fresh crate engine and NOS accessories, that is completely ridiculous!
The sensible route is the lowest mileage possible B230F from a boneyard. Before it goes in, do the water pump, timing belt, valve adjustment, front seals, rear main & oil pan gasket, also reseal the input side of the tranny while the motor is out (consider doing the output bushing and seal as well).
Think $300-500 for the parts and about 8 hours labor. You might find someone to do a quick and dirty swap for much less...
