Startup issue 200 1990

I recently had a startup issue . I had driven around 5 miles and then stopped at a shop, after 5-6 minutes I came back and started the car. It will crank but will not start . I gave it 3-4 long cranks , opened the hood , checked all the electric connections , again cranked but no deal. The again did the whole routine and it started as if nothing had happened . It has started fine every time after that incident . I think a week ago also there was this type of issue but car had started fine after a little longer crank. Car as such is good shape and in good tune.

I looks like as if some component is going to fail, what it can be ? I do not want to be stranded with the whole family in the car.

Does CPS fail like this ?

Regards.

With issues like this. I always think of 25 Amp Fuse under the hood having a bad connection to the Fuse Holder.
The Fuel Pump relay being intermittent maybe carboned up contacts or the Bad solder connections that occur inside it.
Main Fuel pump.
Electric Fuel pumps can die slow. I think on some '90 cars they didn't have the pre pressurizing to the fuel rail.
If you turn the key to the 'Run' position before Cranking, can you hear the fuel pump for about 1 second??
If you can hear it when the car is behaving itself, then make sure you hear it When you have this No start issue again.

Thanks for the pointers , I have replaced the fuse holder with some holder from PepB. I surely did hear the fuel system being charged with the key at run positon. I hope the next time it happens I am at home, I do carry some spares along with fuel relay but roadside fixing is for the brave hearts esp with the family.

Yes, sounds very much like the CPS. Runs fine when it starts? Additional symptoms may eventually include running fine, then dies, but will restart. Also check the powerstage, the ignition amplifier on the fender wall next to the battery. Make sure connector is clean and also remove it from the firewall and make sure contact area is clean. Next time the symptom occurs, shake the wire pigtail going to the CPS and see if that gets things going. If so, that's your culprit.

Thanks David, May be, I hazily remember that I touched the CPS connector on the fire wall when I got out 2nd time and then it started. I will have to check power stage. Car was running solid, before and after the incident with no other symptom.

Shame on me, Tony is right. I forget that the 25 amp fuse near the battery doesn't disappear until 91. That should be your first check always. I don't find them intermittent though, personally. Seems unless they are at least touched, once they get filthy, they are down for the count. That said, the CPS is still a prime suspect. Some years ago the only way I was able to finally identify it as a culprit in an intermittent problem was to stretch out on top of the engine bay while my wife drove the car around a big, empty parking lot at a couple MPH. Something about the engine being under load--angle of the wire--whatever! Not that I recommend the practice, of course.

Just last month I got a call for crank but no start. I had my daughter check the codes in both sockets - first time I ever saw a code set in socket 6!

Shaking the wire to the CPS, just as you did, got it going. I thought I could limp it home (about 5 miles), but got chicken when it came time to pull out on the highway and it was sputtering. Went home to fetch a new CPS and put it in on the side of the road.

On the road for a second I had thought about the err codes but then the problem went away, moreover codes would not have made sense to me without a print out of FAQ. Just now I checked the codes. This is LH 3.1, I don'y know if that makes any diff vis-a-vis LH 2.4.
DTM1 Socket 2 no code 111,
DTM2 Socket 6 I could not make it work but socket 2, pressing the button twice, brings LED into flashing mode. TPS Ok. Removed center coil , cranked the engine ,ran out, could see last two codes of CPS 3,1 .I think that this should have shown some err when the car was not starting.

FAQ are confusing here , I am not sure If socket 6 is purely for EZK and socket 2 only for LH 2.4.

DTM3 is funny , heard lots of clicks , Could feel them in injectors and IAC.

I will try other CPS I have.
Thanks,
Gopesh
