Best Mods for a 245? 200 1991

I have a 1986 245DL (AKA Inga) that has several BB inspired mods. Now these are modifications not adding thing like Poly Bushings or heavy duty springs. Those fit into the same place and are what I call upgrades.

These are my personal must do all found here from the BB, Inga is a South Texas Car so it is all about the cool most of the time.

Reflectix roof modification is a must do for any Wagon. The 244 crowd has insulation, the 245's have an airspace. Put your hand up against the roof on a 90+ sunny day and you will get it burned. Got mine down at Lowes and installed it using 3M 77 adhesive. Been up there for three years and now when you reach up, no heat. Makes the AC work so much better when the heat source on the roof is removed.

Window Tint, added 28% all the way down the sides. That much glass with no tint on a sunny day on blue vinyl and you have yourself a thigh fryer, and nobody wants that.

Your 91 may have a pusher fan in front of the evaporator, but if you don't add one. Helps the AC at low to slow speeds by moving enough air across the coils to at least keep some cold air blowing.

Dave Shannon's sound deadening mod, you can now hear the stereo and yourself think. That was part of the floor pan rust and hole repair with POR 15.

Dave Shannon's Kick Butt lighting mod. Big Plastic or glass headlights, you want more light do that mod. You basically add relays that use the old highlight voltage to close a relay and pull the voltage right from under the hood. Reduces the voltage drop, adds a lot more light. Add a set of Silverstars bulbs and you get a lot more light. Not everyone will agree with that, but trust my eyes still and that is a lot more light out there.

About to add Dave Barton's remote voltage regulator to help solve alternator voltage drop. When Inga gets in stop and go traffic or starting her up after say filling up results in a major voltage drop on the voltmeter. A voltage drop will also reduce your light output. Waiting for the next payday.

Replaced the wimpy horns with a set of dual tone (starts out low and after a couple of seconds a much louder sound kicks in). Helps you to communicate with your fellow drivers when the occasion arises. Had to add a relay under the hood that kicks in the horns when you hit the horn button.

To make the transmission last longer, add a light or mid duty transmission cooler beside the Ac Pusher fan. In hot weather and towing the transmission temps hardly move.

If you car still has the temp compensator board in the instrument cluster, rip it out and add the jumper.

Now these are the upgrades that I think are worth while and make the ride nicer.

Tropical Fan Clutch "AKA The Swamp Cooler", a must have if you live south of at least Interstate 20 or anyplace where the temps reach into the mid ninety's very often. The temp needle does not move on the hottest of days.

Poly bushings anyplace the rubber ones go out. That includes accessory bushings, TAB, and Sway Bar bushings. Do it once and forget it is my line of thought.

Rear end Heavy Duty Springs, do add a bit more harsh feeling to the back. Gets rid of the dread saggin wagon and lets you haul a load without that climbing the hill feeling the entire way.

You will love the Tach but be warned, one gauge leads to another. A voltmeter and an oil pressure gauge would be my choices for the two side slots.

Rip that old beat up Volvo Radio and amp if you have one and replace it with a new unit. Inga's would not change stations most of the time. A new Sony, two more speakers in the rear with an IPod interface and problem solved.

Lots more of them, happens when you read up on the BB. But thanks to these guys and gals here on the BB and their posts, my 72 mile commute is much more comfortable.

Regards,

Paul
