Back lights 200 1991

Any help will be greatly appreciated....
My daughters 1991 240 back up lights are not working.. Fuses are fine and so are the bulbs. Also when she applies the brakes all of the lights come on, except for the back up lights. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening?

Back lights 200 1991

Hi there,

If your daughter's 91 is a sedan, also consider a fault at the harness connection to the left tail light assembly. The L-shaped plug there has two black wires in it, which daisy chain the reverse lighting from the left to the right tail light assembly. A bad spot on the plug there will often cripple both backup lights.

If your daughter's 91 is an automatic, you may be able to fix the lights the same way I did in my daughter's 83, my 84, and then once more in her 91: Fix Your Backup Lights

It isn't so easy if she drives a stick.

The first place I would look is the reverse light switch on the tranny. If you are lucky the wire lug connection may be just loose or corroded, but the switches also fail. If you ground the wire that goes to the switch and the reverse lights come on, the switch is faulty. The ignition switch needs to be in the run position for this test.

I don't think the switch is that expensive but it is difficult to replace, since it's on the top cover of the gearbox.

Back lights Easy to fix 200 1991

First Check fuse 12 and make sure it is clean and has good contacts. There is a Blue Yellow wire that goes to a connector and that has to have 12 volts on it. That goes through the stick shift switch on the Yellow wire. When you put the car in reverse you close the switch and 12 volts goes out on the Black wire. The black wire heads off the back of the car to light them up.

If the switch is open, you just have the take the two little screws in the very front of the shifter console off. Pull the cover towards the back seat and lift up you do not have to remove it. Just twist it to the side and you can get to everything. There on the passengers side is a large triangle shaped switch. It is held into place by two screws, and then you lift it up and forward to remove. The Yellow Black wires are the reverse light and they connect to a plug over on the drivers side of the center console near the bottom.

Called the Neutral Position switch and you can get it from FCP for 20 something dollars. Be sure and adjust the switch so the car starts when the car is in Part by sliding the switch back and forth in the slots where the screws are.

Not hard to do at all.

Regards,

Paul
