It could be a short in the harness between the alternator and the battery, where it runs right under the blazing hot crankcase.

I had some pretty zany warning light action + non-charging battery when that entire portion of the harness essentially welded together.

If you get the alternator tested (at any one of those autoparts stores for free), make sure you disconnect the harness from the alternator first.
