I've never had to push a lifter down into the pan--but have had to work hard manipulating the lifter up and down and by twisting while spraying carb cleaner around the lifter to break up the film of oil sediment that builds up along the bottom edge. As others have noted---long nose locking or needle nose pliers with grooves cut for the lifter upper lip are the tools of choice. -- Dave
