You are doing well to use the marks supplied on the belt when you install one. However, once the belt is on, and the engine turned, the belt marks will be useless until the crank again completes 246 revolutions.
Regarding the I-shaft alignment, it sounds to me like what you heard was in the context of a 7 or 9 series, with a camshaft driven distributor. In that case, I believe that would be right. On the 240, the I-shaft is responsible for the ignition timing up until 1989 when the crank sensor makes the distributor only responsible for selecting the spark plug. It is possible to have the I-shaft off one tooth, such that only the extremes in spark advance show poor ignition symptoms.
