While it is certainly not necessary I find it easier to go ahead and remove the radiator.
It is easy to remove and with it and the shroud out of the way you have a much better field of vision on just what it is you are working on.
Personal tip on seal installation include greasing the surface of the seal and the surface (crankshaft in this case) and rotating the seal as you move it back to the point where you start tapping it into the carrier. It is a bit of bad luck to find that you have rolled the seal lip and dislodged the spring that tensions the seal against the rotating surface- usually discovered much after the fact.
