I am using one on my 142S at the moment and it works well - current temperatures here in Brisbane, Australia are 30-35 degrees C and it is working well.
I have had a fitting (ex-Fiat) braised into the bottom of the radiator into which the thermostat is screwed. The thermostat has 2 spade lugs on to which the 2 wires going to the fan are attached. I also have an overide switch in the circuit should it be necessary to switch on the fan in very hot situations.
The engine in mine sounds like yours, slightly warmed over with SU's, FI exhaust manifold, unknown cam etc.
