Do you need to replace fuel injector O rings? 200 1993

I am swapping different injectors into my 93. Should I be putting on new injector seals? I tried to get some today but nobody seems to carry them. I can order some of course, but since nobody sells them around here, is it necessary?

Hint from the FAQ 200 1993

Injector Seals. [Tips from Tim Curry] These seals are very simple to install. As it happens, the injector and pressure regulator o-rings (which are the same size) are the same as those used on the injectors on a '92 Ford F-150 V-8. Those are quite inexpensive and you get 16 seals in the kit.

Yes, I think they are to be replaced so many thousands of miles, or age, as they cause fuel leakage and loss of compression.

Thanks for the recommendations. I called around again, and to my surprise the Volvo dealer has them in stock and they are reasonably priced. 7.25 Canadian for 1 injector kit including a new cap. About the same price as FCP Groton.

Just be careful when you pull the fuel rail and injectors as a whole unit.

Then pull the metal clips from the injectors to the rail, pull the injector from the rail.

I like to crack the old tip just a pinch with needle nose pliers; this prevents damage the spacer you will be re-using. I like to spray the tip of the injector with carb cleaner and then brake clean to make sure they are some what clean.

Make sure you pick out all of the engine crud from the orifices. The crud will make it harder to seat the new seals and provide a poor seal.

I like to use a little grease on the o-rings before inserting the injector either into the fuel rail or the head.

What did you mean by the above?

Thanks,
Joseph

I have found that if you try to pry the old tip off of the injector; the spacer will get damaged.

I take the NN pliers' tips and grab about a third of the tip. Squeeze gently until the old tip cracks. Now you can pry the old tip off w/ out damaging the injector.
The old tips usually are brittle and the lip of the injector will prevent the non-flexing tip from "popping" off.

I get my kits from a local import parts shop. About $11 per injector for top and bottom rings, plus the plastic spacer (which you DON'T use) Keep the original plastic ring. In my experience, it's very easy to nick a hard, old o-ring when taking off the rail and removing injectors.

In a word yes. Having just pulled a set, the old ones you will find are no longer cylindrical having lost thier flexibility and become significantly flattened. If you dont yes they will go on easy but they are likely to be a source of vacuum leakage. Penny wise pound foolish to not. Great opportunity to eliminate a vaccum leak.
