I poked around again a minute or two this evening with some fresh eyes. I did find a bit of rope in there after all! Rolls around just great now. I was always told that you need to be 10% smarter than the equipment that you are working with, and, well, I suppose we all know where I stand now...

Thanks all for some great responses. I'm sure I'll be after more info in the future and I'll try harder to stump you all next time.
