If I remember it right from having replaced a few 'stats on these engines, if you put the stat in upside down, you cannot get the housing back on. So (IIRC) it's not possible to install it upside down. Anyway, it's fairly obvious which way it goes when you are looking at things. One thing to watch is that the little airbleed hole in the stat's housing and its jiggle pin are at the highest possible point when you place the stat in its seat in the head.
The sending unit and wire for the gauge are fairly well buried beneath the intake manifold - back at about the No.3 runner I believe - so it's unlikely, but not impossible, to disturb the wiring when working on the stat. Nonetheless for the effort involved, it's well worth it to make sure that connection is sound.
