Volvo built the 740 from I believe 1984 to 1992. There are other variants such as the 760. It is basically a gussied up (more luxurious) 240. It has the same drivetrain as a 240, but the interior and many suspension parts, among others, are different. I believe that the ball joints and tie rod ends might be the same as for a 240, which is why the 7 and 9 series are mentioned in the description.
Volvo built the 940 from 1991-1995. It is basically an updated 740. Volvo built a 6 cylinder version called the 960 and later was called the S90/V90. It ran from 1992-1998 - I think??
Some 7 and 9 series parts will work on a 240 (the 2 series). However, don't buy any 7 or 9 series parts for your car unless you are sure they were also made for a 240.
A little sidebar here, when I did the rear brakes on my 850 the pads came in a box marked Volvo 740. I learned something that day. The 740 and 850 use the same rear brakes!
