E code installation 700 1991

I have picked up 2 sets of E-Codes for my 91 740 & 940 wagons. These are a 2 lamp system w/ hi/lo combined in one capsule. They also have the fog lights included.

Looking at Daniel Sterns lighting site he talks about using relays as a better way to get the current to the healights. Both my cars are Canadian & have headlight relays. They also have daylight running lights but it is the actual headlights that are powered not some small secondary light.
- What is the highest wattage headlight bulb you can run safely in the stock wiring harness w/o cooking something? I like the 55w/100 bulbs for legal low beams & real light to see on high.
-Has anyone run the euro daylight running lights instead of what I currently have & how did you wire it?

First, do you have a pic or link of which ones these are? I have some ecodes that I'll be putting in my 940T that has stock fogs, and these are a correct fit with the angle and grille etc. Mine have separate low/high/fog, and I am planning my wiring also.
Perhaps yours are the ones that replace the one piece plastic headlight.
If you have a single high/low bulb, aren't you limited to Sylvania silver or something, that cost around $40-50 pr for the bulbs and put out more light? If so I think you're ok with the wiring you have.
In terms of euro DRL, do you mean, you have a two part marker light, one part for turn signal, one part for DRL, no headlight on at all?
Garaget.org (warning; Volvo porn) has a lot of pretty pics of hot Volvos, some with nice light setups. Chrome has a translate function which can be helpful.

I am sorry to threadjack but I am hoping to learn. Does "e-codes" mean the European version? Is it specific to lights or are other parts included?

Again, sorry for the jack but I don't know everything and am not the least bit bashful about admitting it and asking questions.

I think that the trait means putting ones ego away (not always a bad thing) and the benefit is being able to learn more completely. Otherwise people tend to only partially answer.

      My current (non-e code) lights are;
      - 2 lamp plastic w/ no fog lights on 1991 740
      - 2 lamp glass w/ fog lights on 1991 940
      I have to use the H4 (hi/lo combined) w/ the e-codes.
The e-codes have a daytime running light setup that uses a light in the upper clear portion of the turn signal corner light. My current DRL are the headlights come on when the car starts (Canadian setup). The headlight bulbs would live alot longer if I can run the e-code DRL setup. That is what I'm looking for someone who has made this change.
Also what are the stock headlight relays & wiring good for as far as wattage?
      cheers ian

@unspoken; not a jack at all IMO, correct to put questions in with similar. ecodes always refer to lights as far as I've seen it used. Euro lights are different, don't use 'sealed' sorts of housings. The old 7" were truly sealed, now there is a bulb that can be replaced but is fitted with a rubber gasket. ecodes don't necessarily use a seal. They are pretty protected from the elements though.

@ibs, then do you have different lights for the two cars? They do not interchange really, the grille is different, the line from the hood is different, the mounts are completely different, the angle of the lights is different.
My headlights, which I believe are the same as your 940, are always on by choice. I have changed one bulb on all my cars 7 and 9, that was used, in several years.
But I am going to put the clear part on the corner light on also when I do the swap I think. I have not yet figured the wiring out though. It is hard to find how to do it in the US, they seem to do it a lot in Sweden.

Much obliged. My current Volvo has the four sealed beams (two high and two low) and is a beautiful old '82 245, aesthetically I can see no reason to change it. I didn't bookmark it but I did come across some that claimed to be very bright replacements which might be nice for moose spotting but these seem to be "bright enough" so far.

And I'd thought I'd been cured from volvoitis... Ah well, here I go again only I think it may be worse this time. ;)

          Thanks again.

            E code installation - esp. 4 sealed beam units 700 1991

To the person with 4 round sealed beams - lucky you! Classic Garage (google it) list Indian made relicas of Cibie and Hella w/ euro spec lenses, some w/ flat glass if you like that. ALSO, slightly higher wattage H-4 bulbs available as well as super high wattage, which may take a better quality bulb socket (e-bay) as well as good relays and wiring - don't have any idea if Canadian Volvo relays are good enough.. I have a never used set and they look same construction as Cibie, although probably not as high quality. MUCH cheaper than Cibie as seen on Daniel Stern and elsewhere.
