Hi Matt,

This is one of those questions where year is actually relevant, but it would not have done me any good for you to have posted the year because I don't recall offhand which is the pre-86 and which is the post-86 design.

So, I'll just post both images. The first needs the retainer clip worked off - barbs hold it to the shaft. The second is a twist-lock, bayonet style. Surely the secret you're looking for is getting the cap off to expose the views below: Just reach from behind with a stiff wire or pick, to poke the cap out from one of the nine holes encircling the rear of the knob.
