Interior windsheild trim on 1989 240 DL Sedan 200 1989

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1989 240 DL Sedan that had to have the windsheild replaced. The area under the gasket/trim is rusty and the installer said he couldn't replace the windshield until the area is cleaned and rust free. Fortunately its just surface rust.

It would be a better job if I could remove the interior trim around the windsheild. I've managed to remove the two pices that cover the pillars, but the trim piece at the interior top of the windsheild is so covered in sealant that I'm not able to determine how it fastens. In trying to remove the trim, I snapped a small section off.

Before I do more damage to the trim piece can anyone tell me how the piece fastens and an easy way to remove it? Please remember my piece is so covered with sealant goo that I can't see under the trim to determine where/how its fastened.

The two side pieces were fastened with a plastic plug that fit into the metal the fit into a corresponding grove in the plastic piece.

Thanks...

As you can easily see, that top piece is secured in place with several small phillips head screws. I just removed one of these strips today on my '83 245. I, too, had some sealant sticking the trim in place. I removed all the screws. I have an upholstery tool that has a curved end that is good for prying. I've seen these in auto parts stores. Beginning at one end, I worked both sides of the trim either toward the center or towards the opposite end of the trim. The screws fasten onto a clip. This clip slips onto raised slot in the body above the windshield. Perhaps a hair dryer might loosen up the adhesive enough to make pulling the trim away easier. I'm assuming you have removed the rear view mirror. Good luck.

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike

Wish I had a definitive answer but one thing is for sure,if the old sealant has spread to the trim piece you may not be able to get the trim off.As mentioned you have already snapped a piece off.You could try to run a razor blade under there to try and break free some of the bond.At the same time run a putty knife and gently pry upwards along the trim. You may want to ask the glass installer what he recommends to soften the sealant.Maybe he has some type of desolving chemical. As a long shot I would try baby oil,yes baby oil.It is known to disolve tar so heck it might work on that black stuff too.If not use it to remove the tar spots on the lower part of the car body!Good luck.
