Although I've done this many times, I still have to close my eyes to get the full benefit of the sense of touch, while aligning the regulator assembly to the alternator. No fingers on the brushes, just feel the brushes compressing the springs against the slip rings while moving it slightly so the first screw finds its home. Then hold the regulator flat against the alt while you explore with the second screw for its spot.
If you don't succeed, pull the regulator out and examine it carefully until you've memorized its shape. Then close your eyes and try again. Stand on something for comfort. Don't be fooled by the feel of these protruding screws from the inside.
