Fuel issue, maybe 200 1989

After stopping at the store on the way home from work a few days ago, my 240 would not start. It cranked well, but refused to catch.
After a tow, I changed the plugs and air filter and checked to make sure the plugs were firing. They were.
I dropped the under car fuel pump and confirmed that I had current at the pump.
I plugged the pump back in and gave the engine a crank and it started.

The car started fine the next morning, and again at work at the end of the day.
After an Approx 30 km highway commute, I stopped at the same store, and when I came out the car would not start again. I slid underneath and wiggled the fuel pump/filter and wires through the cover plate. The car started.

I am planning to change the filter (maybe a year old), and am thinking obout doing the pump.

The second time it happened, the fuel tank was full. Is this a common problem?. It has never happened before.

Thank you

I think there is a greater chance that it is simply the fuel injection relay that is the root of the problem. It can be intermittent and things you do (wiggle wires, etc.) only to find that it starts may be simply coincidental. Swearing and slamming the door might have the same effect as wiggling the wires at the fuelpump.

How old is the fuel injection relay? If you solder simply remove the cover and reflow all the solder joints on the circuit board. The relay is located above the passenger's feet on the inside of the firewall- white cover on a relay about 3/4 x 1 1/4 x 1 1/4.

Have you cleaned the 25 amp fuse on the driver's inside fender?

    Hi,

Try cleaning the fuel pump connections.

Is the main pump operating loudly when it does operate?

    Thanks,
    Goatman

P.S. That's really scary! Not being able to trust your car anymore :(

The connections look good. The rubber boots are in good condition, but I will try to clean them anyway. No, the pump isn't running loud, I have to get close to hear it at all.

      Thanks

I wouldn't replace it then. Mine ran for ~2 years and sounded like a nest of hornets before it died on me.

Sounds like the wires are bad, but do try jumpering around the relay the next time you have the issue.

        Good Luck
