What engines will fit? 200

Ok, I've got an automatic 89' 245 with 305,000 miles on it and I was thinking... Maybe in a couple of years I might want to pull my B230F out and drop something else in it that will give me a whole lot more get up and go.

So to that end what can I drop in it? I'm thinking a turbo at least, but what about one of the 6 cylinders out of a 260/760 or 960. Will it fit? If so, what must I modify to make it fit.

Also, what transmission should I be looking for to combine with it. I want to switch over to a manual, hopefully a 5 speed. Not sure which one will be the ticket, but then I'm open to suggestions.

I plan to pull all this stuff from my local PNP so what ever I get it will need to be rebuilt and a whole lot of new inner parts, possibly some high performance IPD stuff.

Any ways there you have it. Please let me know what you all think.

Regards,

Matt

To all who responded...

Thanks for all your input.

I'm probably going to go with a Volvo engine combo, but will definitely look into dropping a v-6 or 8 into it.

Thanks again.

One of the easiast way out is to get an engine and tranny out of the 940 Turbo.
It has good power and probably minimal mods required compared to dropping in a V6 or a V8.

But the V8 sounds more fun....:)

I agree. The simplest would be to drop a 940/740 turbo w/tranny right in. Or, if it will work, swap the auto for a manual Volvo tranny.

Bear in mind any weight differences between the stock engine and let's say a V-8. That could throw off your car's handling characteristics.

The Ford engine and trans is about 100-120 pounds heavier. With my GLT's stiff front springs, the car had a bit more nose down rake. Moving the battery to the trunk would have got rid of almost half of that by distribution. I never bothered.

Back in '95 I installed a '92 Ford 5.0 HO in my 1982 GLT, using the T-5 five speed. Transformed the car - easy to drive, fast, and got about the same fuel mileage as the auto B23E that came out. The engine fit so well it was like Volvo designed the car for it. Still miss it.
The Ford has the advantage of small size and lighter weight. The Chev GEN 1 engines are great, but bigger and heavier, which doesn't help traction. The Chev to avoid is the mid- nineties LT-1 - absolute pile of crap. Had one of those in a '94 Camaro...even GM didn't like the engine.

The mid-90's LT-1 was plagued with the initial design versions of the Optispark ignition system, which was failure prone. Many, many sad stories on the F-car BB's. Other than that it is a std, pretty bulletproof small-block Chev. The one in my 740 wagon (94 Firebird donor) has been converted to an aftermarket ignition using 4 Cadillac Northstar coils so that there is no secondary (high) voltage inside the Optispark distributor. This sidesteps the design flaw that typically caused the distributor to fail.

Not sure how many miles were on my LT-1 when it was installed, but well over 100k since going in the 740...still smooth with plenty of power, and 25MPG(US) on the highway. And lots of laughs humbling the kids in their ricers.

No argument about it being powerful - a fun engine when it runs correctly.
Unfortunately the aluminum head LT-1's pop head gaskets, and suffer water pump failures. Both are expensive, and on the F-body cars, doing head gaskets is going to make your chiropractor happy. I know....
The opti was certainly a bad point. As were the ignition wires. And the O2 sensors. Intake manifold gaskets popped under warranty, and had been done on my engine during the recall.
Compared to earlier engines, it's quite a list. But they sounded great, made big power, and (having bought it to replace the 5.0 powered Volvo) none of the punks in 5.0 Mustangs ever raced me....they knew what the outcome would be!

Check out www.turbobricks.com. I'm thinking Ford or Chitzy small block V8 or a Ford Super Coupe V6. The only tranny choice is a Tremic.
