volvo 240 power loss @ first then chk engine light + high idle 200

hello

I have a 89 240 wagon (gas) today we went to go to grocery store and about a block from my house I started losing power turned around and limped home mess about in driveway for awhile trying to find anything obvious.

started car back up and it idled ok gave it some gas and it would get power then cut out and get power again and cut out (not stall but lose power)

anyways left it idling for a bit while swearing and listening *mostly swearing in honesty =p

gave it gas once more didn't cut out but check engine light came on.... drove around block and didn't lose power but engine light stays lit and idles high. restarted same thing high idle check engine light but power.

shut the car off disconnected battery hooked it back up after 30 seconds or so and restarted idle normal check engine light off but loses power let car run about 3 minutes gave it gas got check engine light and high idle but not losing power again?

anyways if anyone could help me figure out why that is that would be great.... I am guessing (really) maybe the 02 sensor giving bad readings so messing with fuel until the computer decides the o2 sensor is full of #$%*& and goes into some sort of fail safe mode??? am i close ? way off?

anyways perhaps obviously i'm no mechanical genius but i'm cheap and I have wrenches so if anyone could help me sort this out I would be in your debt.

thank you.

oh also could in the worst case I drive it to the mechanic like this or should i have it towed to be safe?

so.. i read the code from the obd1 and got 1 3 3 (throttle switch idle) I cleaned the throttle body and reseated the cable for the throttle switch.

after this restarted and car runs / idles ok no recurrence of power loss on test drive chk engine light off.

soooo.... I guess I may have fixed it apparently....

Hi,

After removing/cleaning throttle body a while back I had the car acted the same way you have described-when I cleaned the throttle body the Throttle Position Switch got out of alignment.

So I think you probably fixed the problem.

Travis

i have not yet done so ..but I was just reading the faq about it. I suppose in retrospect i should have done that first but i was a bit flustered or whatnot.

now that it is dark and cold I may wait till tomorrow morning

Hey!
I'm far from being a pro but have you tried flashing some codes?

John
