The dustshields prevent dust,water,SALT, from going on disc,whatever goes on disk gets slung off by centrifugal force onto calipers .Here in rust belt thats just suicidal to calipers.My daughters intrepid has no shield,i have replaced her disks with only the exposed side being corroded ,so there is a noticable
effect
