I would definitely check the trans mount - and also see if you can get it into gear if you wait a second to shift. Might also be shift linkage bushings. (It's also always a good time to change the ATF that's floating around in your M46, if it's old)
To answer your question - indefinitely. Double clutching was standard before we had synchros. Think of it as a little trip back in time. Maybe that will keep you from tearing your hair out.
I do believe Goatman has been working on quite the gearbox rebuild and probably has a wealth of info about it.
