1984 244 Transmission Issue 200 1984

A noise started in my transmission a few days ago. A rattle. A bearing issue sounding rattle. "Wow, I hope that isn't as bad as it sounds.", I thought. Primarily because of my lack of funds at this time and my lack of knowledge about transmissions. And, I had always heard that 240 tranny's are generally bullet-proof. Well, yesterday the noise rapidly got louder and more obnoxious until finally culminating in a very loud crunch/rattle that left my car slightly in gear, enough to get through the intersection and park it. At this point, I enlisted the help of a trusty friend, who happened to be at the bar across the street, to help me get my car to a reasonable place to park. This was when I found out that it will not engage any gear except 4th. I have access to used transmissions and tools and a pretty good pool of knowledgable friends to help me fix this issue but I thought I would also throw a couple of questions out here in interwebz land. Is my tranny shot or can I replace inner workings? How hard is it, really, to swap a tranny in these cars?...(Time consumption). Anything in particular that I need to keep in mind while doing this job?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
Wes

Update: With the help of my good friend Matt B, I successfully pulled my tranny, and the tranny from my previous 240 and swapped them. Hard work but not as hard as I thought. I thank anyone that contributed advice. And, I am upgrading myself from "n00b mechanic" to "somewhat proficient mechanic". Have a nice day!

Man, I don't know how it is that such a nice guy can bring out the worse in good people.

Guess it's because you're a punk, Wes :)

Yea folks... AugustWes is a good guy, a good friend, a good neighbor. I'd stand up for him any day.

'84 and older donor cars aplenty 'round these parts. Plenty of M46s to spare. And plenty of experience. Not a big deal.

I'm looking forward to seeing what's inside that gearbox. Laygear fell out? Input shaft bearing failed? Multiple failures? I'm going with the latter. This will be fun. Thank goodness it's spring!

Full report to follow, Wes can do the bolt turning, I'll be on safety patrol. No worries.

And, Wes will have a nice candlestick when he's done... not unlike the one I got out of my 1800s when I trashed that tranny.

b/c you have a 1984, you'll need to make sure that the replacement tranny you install has the speedo gear output on the end of it. Electric speedos started in 1986, which means you're drawing from a fairly elderly pool of donors. Perhaps the back ends of early and later M46 can swap the way the back ends of the AW70 do, perhaps not.

I've never dropped and swapped an M46 or M47, but I have done the automatic AW70. Not fun. Do not do this unless you have a relatively competent friend to help you, plus access to a transmission jack. Budget the entire day for the swap.

Hi Wes,

I read every sentence, waiting for the punch line. The line that would tell me which "bullet-proof" transmission you were talking about.

OK, I think the 4th gear comment tells me it is an M46.

Simply put, you disconnect the drive shaft, shifter, clutch cable, and wiring. Drop the starter, support the engine, support the transmission, disconnect the bell housing bolts, separate and lower the transmission and overdrive unit.

Then you take it apart and decide if you're fixing or swapping. No one knows if your tranny is shot.

This swapping of transmissions is probably what you need to do, but it isn't a level-2 DIY project unless you bring some commitment. You're better to start (as a self-described car repair n00b from the lost-brakes hit-a-tree thread) by checking another corner of the interwebz for a good opinion on whether you're up for this. Hi Wes,

You're fortunate to have Matt to help you. I'm confident he could get in my car, drive it for a few minutes, and tell me more about what it needs than I could; Matt is that good. We're not all blessed with savvy neighbors, so analyzing descriptions of sounds posted on a board is a really poor second-best.

On TB, much of that is being done by cell phone video. Surely as I posted the link, they are having server troubles, like this place did months ago. My guess was, per capita, the regulars there have swapped more trannies than the regulars on this board.

Wow,

Did you run the gearbox out of oil?

I guess it's a moot point now that it's likely trashed.

You might still be able to find a countershaft and new gears. I think dealer list is pretty expectable.

No harm now in taking it apart right? I mean, you really do want to fix it don't you?

That sounds about right but I am not sure why. And, yes, I want to/have to fix it. Only transportation I have. Mostly just curious about any "secrets" or pitfalls involved in swapping these things out.

Pitfalls?

Yes, this is a dangerous job. I would not even attempt it if I were in your position. I would find alternate transportation as quickly as possible (neighbor, friend, bike, bus pass, new (cheap, old, dented, ugly colored) car. Just getting under the car is hell, and the great quantities of poisonous dusts and debris can and will choke away your intelligence quite quickly. If you doubt me, just ponder a moment about a ‘‘cultured‘‘ mechanic. Not all intelligent are cultured, and not all cultured are intelligent, but there is quite a degree of correlation to those idiots who care only about themselves and not of the world, and the lifestyle of which they lead.

If I were you, I would be happy. I would be happy that I would know enough to help myself. I would trouble and try only to remove the strife and misery from my path with that which men die from lacking, and win by attacking with, that strategic application to a cause.

So, stay out of the parking lot, and try to find a girl however plain with a nice little car... :) I think you‘ll end up a lot happier in the end.
