Did you install the cupped washers (about 1-1/2 inches in diameter) that fit under the strut mounts and spread the upward load across the rubber? If you forget these washers, the mounts are guaranteed to fail in exactly the way you described: the strut top pushes through the rubber. You are lucky it did not go through the hood.
