Fuel pumps, fuel lines, and leaks. HELP 200 1986

Having a heck of a time installing a new main pump and filter on my friend's '86 245. It is a Michigan car an rust is everywhere. The bolts and brackets for the mounting are all rusted out and breaking. Solvable. BUT, even with a new fuel feed line from the pump to the filter and a new check valve and new copper washers I am still getting leaks. Tightening and re-tightening. The guys at CARQUEST recommended using Teflon tape just like for water plumbing. I was surprised. They said it will not degrade with gas and works fine. Is this right? I haven't tried it yet. BTW, those new fuel feed lines are pricey. Whooee.
