Yes, I had that happen to me. My attempt to lube it with the drive in place was unsuccessful. It was so bound up in dried up grease I needed to remove the drive and put it in a vise to disassemble it. For me, in an '89, that meant removing the dash.
The sound it made mimicked a dragging blade, so I'm sure that contributed to letting it go on so long before recognizing the real problem.
