wow! the timing belt had two 4 inch sections stripped of teeth. i had ruled that out because the belt is only a few months old and i had checked on it not long ago, i must have abused it or it's a dud, so happy for a non-interference engine.

new belt and she purrs like a kitten. thanks everyone.
