Have you felt for similar play in a known good M46? (re-reading... I see that is your intention)

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by slack in the drive shaft when you let off the gas, but it sure sounds like you may be throwing parts (and a lot of work) at a problem without knowing for sure where the problem lies.

Ditto the brake calipers on the other car. Preemptively replacing calipers for a seizing condition due to cold weather? Hmmm.
