I had my 1980 242 door panels repaired/recovered by the interior trim guy at a local hot rod shop. He cut off the lower part of the panel and attached a new piece of a hard, waterproof cardboard-like material that is commonly used for door panels. Then, fabricated new vinyl covering and cemented that on. Not cheap, about $500 per panel, but was able to do a custom design. Check out your local hot rod shops and go in and talk to them. This is the type of work that you really should have done locally so you can let them have the panels and/or the car to make sure they fit them properly.
