The o-ring to seal the dipstick tube was found just on 1994 and later 940s. It is part number 960162. The 1994+ cars also use a different dipstick tube to accommodate the o-ring. The earlier engines just relied on the tight fit of the dip stick tube to seal it to the block. The o-ring is an upgrade Volvo made to keep oil leaks down. The block is made just a little different to fit the o-ring and dipstick tube. In the earlier blocks, the ridge on the dipstick tube fits on top of the block, while the late engines have a recess which the ridge on the dipstick tube fits down into, with the o-ring under it.
What Dick Reiss is referring to is the o-ring on the dipstick.
