variable cam timing question ? 200 1987

I just finished putting an A cam in my '87 245. It is much better than the M cam ( free to a good home for the shipping...) that was in it. Now it will chirp the tire(s) and runs out of breath at about 5500 rpm, not bad for a car with 245,000 miles. The engine is also much quieter with a fresh valve adjustment.

Since I have gone this far, does the adjustable cam sprocket make a similar amount of difference, i.e. is it worth the effort ? I know that it will never be a rocketship, but it should be a little bit of fun to drive.

Thanks

Greg

    hello
the adjustable gear wont make the difference the a cam does. it will help a little bit off the line if advanced. probably worth the 50 bucks if dale has any left.
    good luck
    Mike

If you had an M, you have an NA car. One of the most cam-swappiest NA guys I know of, who has tried at least 5, said that all the Volvo cams ran best straight up.

Volvo factory cams straight up maybe...

V15, VX and others loose bottom end and a variable cam gear is crucial for proper dial in.

Did you also replace the Hushers on the valve stems?

If you did, how did you check the Valve clearence, I heard you can't get a true reading with new Hushers.

I did not replace the hushers. They weren't instock and I had a Honda Civic waiting in line for a new lower left motor mount. I think you would have to set the valve adjustment, remove the cam and buckets, and then install the hushers.

That was my plan, I was just wondering if you had another way without removing the Cam twice.

If/when I upgrade, I'm replacing the original Hushers. I bet they are none existent after 300K miles

I found using an adjustable cam gear with the "A" cam didn't make that much of a difference. Brought back a little bottom end, but the "A" cam isn't that radical and does OK straight up. IMO: Maybe worth one of Dale's $50 drilled gears but not the expensive IPD or RSI version.

I'd be a little cautious pushing the valve springs with 245K miles on them.

    Bert
