Hello,
We use the following technique to install water pumps on B18/B20/B30 Volvo engines:
Start by gluing the gasket to the back of the water pump.
Make sure the gasket does not protrude too far above the water pump. In rare cases, the top of the gasket might have to be trimmed.
Install the square oring on the water pump inlet tube and install the pipe in the water pump.(Some people install the lower pipe after the pump is installed)
Put a little grease on the engine block side of the water pump gasket.
Install the correct height orings on the top of the water pump.
Install the water pump with just the top 2 bolts. Do not tighten the bolts yet!
Use a pair of #2 Phillips head screwdrivers in the lower 2 holes to pry the water pump upwards against the cylinder head.
While prying upwards on the screwdrivers, snug the upper bolts to the point that the water pump will not move, but do not fully tighten the 2 upper bolts yet.
Install and tighten the 2 lower bolts. Do not forget to install the heater pipe 1st.
Tighten the upper 2 bolts.
Then install and tighten the lower pipe bolt.
