Wiper arm removal? 1800 1971

Can anyone tell me how to remove the wiper arms from the linkage? I've loosen the top nut but I can't figure out how to release the arms?

First put a couple of small pieces of tape to mark where the wipers sit when they are off - you probably want to put them back in the same place.

Remove the nut completely and put some penetrating oil around the threads. Gently tap the end of the arm in a couple of directions, Letting it sit for a while may help.

What is under there is a cylinder that has splines all around it, The wiper socket is splined also. If it has been on for a long time, the extra surface area can make it stick pretty good.

You will need to pull, wiggle, pry, and whatever you can come up with in order to pull the socket off the cylinder.

You do not want to damage the mechanism.

lift up the wiper and look down the bottom of the arm at the pivot point... you'll see a small rectangular clip that is spring loaded and hooks under the edge the bottom of that cylinder. Pull on that clip about 1/8" before you start shredding things with your pry tools...

The nuts have nothing to do with it. That just holds the mechanism under the dash in place.

I think your mention of the top nut made James think it was a system like on a 240..

Pictured, the white arrow points to the little tab you hook something to and pull. At the same time, gently pry (twist flat screwdriver) between threaded part and the wiper arm. Try to keep it straight! You do not want to strip splines..

Thank you Matt - the wipers have been off my basket case for a long time and I was thinking about a newer brick.

Sorry!
