There is a small gauge or a plastic blank to the left of the radio. Snap it out and unbolt the radio. The first time you pull the radio, you may have to remove the glove box and reach behind the radio to release it. I think, however, it will just pull out on an '89.

That radio is not worth fixing.

I nursed along the radios in the '87 and the '91 for years because I wanted the dash to look original. When I finally replaced them with low end Sonys, the sound was significantly better and they looked good. Why did I waste my time with those piece of junk original radios?

I got kits at the radio install shop at Best Buy. One kit made the wiring plug-and-play, even bypassing the amp in the '91 that had failed. The other kit fit the dash to make the radio fit smoothly and fill the odd-shaped hole in the dash.

If it is like the one I just pulled from my 92, you will have to remove the glovebox and go in behind the unit to separate a bracket that runs straight out from the back of the radio.

It is a bit hard to explain ..but once you get in there ..you will see how one half of that bracket slips into the other half and locks. That was on mine, anyway.

There is a tool - like a two pronged fork, that would press together one end of the part from the radio so to make it easy to slip out of the other half. I wish I had had it, as I struggled to get it loose for quite a while.

I finally did by bending and prying with a long screwdriver. Hopefully when you get in there ...you will see an easier way.

Best Buy is good, I am sure ..but be sure and check out Crutchfield. When I did mine a few weeks back ..they were doing a number of radios with free trim and harness.

      Here is mine installed.
