"I wanted to flush the thing with the nifty IPD hose for that, but then read about how high mileage fluid should not be messed with."
• I flush-changed mine using cheap fluid then Mobil-1 at 127K and again about 30K later. Now at 194K with no problems. Hi mileage warning is a myth, IMO.
"However, today, in reviewing this topic, I am reading that you should not *flush* the system fully, but that you should still change the pan fluid and clean/change the filter."
• It's just the reverse and garbled. I start a flush by draining the pan then refilling an equal amount (about 2 1/2 qts.). Since 1990 Volvo advised to NOT change the filter (screen).
"Which is it? Do not touch at all, period? Or do not FLUSH, but still do the incomplete job of just the pan fluid?"
• My opinion is to flush as described above, starting with a pan drain and fill with fresh to start the flush. You probably have an AW70 or 71. Total capacity is 7.4 quarts, use 10 or 12 quarts for the flush&fill, proceeding cautiously near the end to avoid an overfill.
"Supposedly this will slowly incorporate the new fluid and not wreck the seals and such.
• I suppose so, if suppositories are allowed. No leaks so far.
