Dear 94 945T,

Hope you're well. I concur with jerryc's advice: clean the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV).

To remove carbon, which can "gum-up" an IACV, I use a solvent, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). MEK, a chemical cousin to acetone, evaporates more slowly than does acetone, but is equally - and highly - flammable. Use MEK only with plenty of ventilation and absolutely do not smoke (or allow anyone else to do so), anywhere near where MEK is used.

Keep the hose-end of the IACV pointed down-wards, to prevent solvent from entering the motor compartment. If you want to soak the IACV's hose-end in solvent, be sure to keep the solvent below the level at which it will enter the motor compartment.

Because the IACV is made of aluminum, do not use steel tools to clean it, as they can scratch the valve's working surfaces. Use cotton-tipped swabs and solvent to remove carbon deposits. Be sure to remove any cotton fibers from the valve.
