Rough and stumble: Can't figure it out 200 1993

Car is running very rich and fouling plugs black. I have new parts that I keep on hand. I put in new AMM and coolant temp sensor. Pulled and spray cleaned the O2 Sensor as it was very sooty. It seems to idle and run a little better (more air getting in to burn the fuel?) if I unplug the vacuum line on the top of the manifold with the black/white check valve that runs thru the firewall. If I hook that line back up it dies. It threw some codes over the last few days. 1-1-3, 3-2-2.

Seems it either is getting too much fuel dumped in or it is starving for air. Not sure which.

I am taking it to my mechanic friend on Tuesday but I'm just aggravated I can't diagnose it.

    Took it to my mechanic:

Changed out the thin gas soaked oil from running too rich. Checked for air leaks (none).

He tapped on the new aftermarket Chinese AMM and was able to change the idle from bad to good, but then it would revert to bad. He checked the contacts in the AMM plug and cleaned it out but we finally decided to go ahead and get a rebuilt Bosch AMM and it worked perfectly. New plugs installed. Fuel pressure regulator working fine.

Conclusion: Bad original AMM and the Chinese one I got to replace it on Ebay was questionable, but he noticed the plug where it snapped on was kind of "wiggly" and loose, probably leading to the sporadic poor running car or the electronics inside it were not good. Rebuilt Bosch unit fixed it and is cheaper than a car note.

Thanks to all for their input!

I've replaced intake manifolds on 3 240s this year. I'd start there. Look for breaks and for staining from a poorly seated manifold. And chec/clean/grease the 2 FI grounds when you reinstall.

I had a rich car last year that got worse and finally would flood to hydrolock. Turned out to be a bad pink-label ECU

It could be the O2 sensor. Especially if it's the original with 220k...:)

Read the following from the 700/900 FAQ.

    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm#LH24FuelInjectionFault

Code 322: Based on that table it could be your AMM plug or wire. the first thing I would do is unplug your AMM and reinstall it with a touch of dielectric grease on the prongs. Also make sure the plug is tightly connected and the prongs are all intact. Check the whole wire's condition.

Code 113: Sounds like this could be an O2 sensor problem. Is it the original @ 220K? If so, that could be it. Test it if you can.

Finally, if it were my car I would also do an exhaustive search for vacuum leaks. A bad vacuum leak can cause the idle/running problems you describe. How is the throttle body hose? Any cracks or leaks? Look it over thoroughly. I'd also test the intake manifold gasket and all your other engine vacuum lines for leaks.

Good luck and post back with your findings!

Do you smell gas in the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator?

Faint smell, when the engine idles and i take off the vacuum hose to the FPR, the idle increases slightly. NO visible gas in vacuum line.

I wonder if it might be the O2 sensor?
