This sounds like a failed AMM?

If it is the transmission it might be a badly adjusted or broken kick down cable. Grab the cable and see if it moves freely and retracts. Adjustment is 1 or 2 mm slack and when you pull it tight you should hear a metallic clunk down into transmission.
